Bold Design Can Make a Big Impact
A successful kitchen remodel does not always require changing the footprint. Sometimes, the greatest transformation comes from giving an existing layout a stronger sense of style, selecting materials that complement one another, and incorporating features that make everyday life more enjoyable.
That was the approach behind this recent kitchen remodel by Capitol Kitchen & Bath. While the original kitchen offered a functional layout, its oak cabinetry, laminate countertops, and builder-grade finishes no longer reflected the homeowner's vision for the space.
Inspired by a mid-century modern aesthetic, our design team paired bright painted cabinetry with dramatic black quartz countertops, matte black accents, and a rich green backsplash to create a kitchen that feels both timeless and full of personality.
Elevating an Existing Kitchen Without Changing the Layout
One of the most rewarding parts of kitchen design is helping homeowners recognize the potential in the space they already have.

Because the existing layout functioned well, the design focused on creating a stronger visual identity. Light cabinetry, dark countertops, green tile, and matte black details introduced contrast and character without requiring major structural changes.
The result shows how the right combination of materials can redefine a familiar room.
Bright Cabinetry Creates a Timeless Foundation
The foundation of this remodel begins with Koch Cabinetry from the Marquis Classic Collection in the Savannah 15 door style with five-piece drawer fronts. Finished in Dove paint, the cabinetry immediately brightens the space and creates a clean backdrop for the kitchen's more dramatic design elements.
Painted cabinetry continues to be one of the most popular choices for kitchen remodels because it reflects natural light, creates a more open feel, and offers timeless appeal that works with a variety of design styles.
To complete the look, matte black hardware from the Atlas Homewares Oskar Collection introduces contrast while reinforcing the clean lines that define the kitchen's mid-century modern influence.
Together, these selections create a space that feels both classic and current.
Bold Finishes Bring the Design to Life
One of the defining features of this remodel is the balance between light and dark finishes.
The polished Jet Black Quartz by Caesarstone creates a striking contrast against the Dove cabinetry while adding depth and sophistication throughout the kitchen. Beyond its appearance, quartz provides the durability and low-maintenance performance homeowners appreciate in one of the busiest rooms of the home.

The true focal point, however, is the glossy green subway tile backsplash. Its rich color introduces warmth, texture, and personality while complementing both the cabinetry and black accents. Rather than relying on decorative accessories to create visual interest, the backsplash becomes an integral part of the design itself.
This combination of materials gives the kitchen its distinctive character while remaining balanced and timeless.
Thoughtful Fixtures Improve Everyday Function
Beautiful kitchens should also work beautifully. This remodel features an Elkay Crosstown 18-gauge stainless steel workstation sink with equal double bowls and a low Aqua Divide. The integrated workstation accessories help maximize prep space while making everyday tasks like washing produce, preparing meals, and cleaning up more efficient.
For a smaller kitchen, features like these allow the workspace to do more without requiring additional countertop space.
The sink is paired with a Delta Stryke single-handle pull-down faucet in a matte black finish, bringing both convenience and continuity to the design.
Every kitchen fixture was selected not only for its appearance, but for the value it adds to the homeowner's daily routine.
Before and After
Before the remodel, the kitchen offered a functional layout, but it no longer reflected the homeowner’s vision for the space.
Rather than changing the footprint, the remodel focused on giving the kitchen a more intentional design through updated cabinetry, stronger contrast, and carefully selected finishes.

The new Dove-painted cabinetry creates a brighter foundation, while the polished black quartz countertops, rich green backsplash, and black accents introduce the mid-century modern character the homeowner wanted.
Although the layout remains familiar, the finished kitchen feels completely different. What was once a more traditional space now feels custom, cohesive, and full of personality, showing how thoughtful design choices can create a dramatic transformation without adding square footage.
Designed Around the Homeowner's Vision
Every homeowner has a different vision for their kitchen. For this project, the goal was not simply to update finishes. It was to create a kitchen with personality—one that felt brighter, more intentional, and better reflected the homeowner's style while continuing to function beautifully for everyday life.

The combination of custom cabinetry, bold materials, and carefully selected fixtures resulted in a kitchen that feels welcoming, distinctive, and built to stand the test of time.
